In New York hokken alle junkies samen op Verdi Square, een plein in de binnenstad dat ook wel Needle Park (spuitpark) genoemd wordt. Op een dag, na een illegale abortus, ontmoet de naïeve Helen de aan drugs verslaafde kruimeldief Bobby. Ze worden verliefd op elkaar en gaan samenwonen in een armzalige hotelkamer. Al gauw raakt ook Helen verslaafd aan drugs. Om de heroïne te kunnen betalen, is ze verplicht om zich te prostitueren. Wanneer Bobby dit ontdekt, slaan de stoppen bij hem helemaal door.
