Veroordeeld tot levenslang voor een bankoverval die hij niet heeft gepleegd, slaagt Jack Hammond er tijdens een onbewaakt moment in uit de gevangenis te ontsnappen. Alles gaat goed tot hij bij een benzinestation twee agenten opmerkt, die toevallig in de buurt zijn. Paniek maakt zich meester van Jack. Hij gijzelt de knappe Natalie en slaat met haar op de vlucht in haar supersnelle rode sportwagen. Het hele politiekorps, met in één van de wagens een televisieploeg, zet onmiddellijk de achtervolging in. Boven de rode BMW circelt ook een nieuwshelikopter. Tijdens de wilde rit en in alle chaos leren Jack en Natalie elkaar beter kennen. Het blijkt dat zij de dochter is van een rijke industrieel, die niets of niemand zal sparen om haar weer heelhuids terug te krijgen.
