Op Jonathan Grave's achttiende verjaardag erft hij van zijn overleden ouders een verouderd en verwaarloosd huis, met geheimzinnige krachten. Achtergelaten door zijn vader, die een passie voor hekserij had. Bij toeval roept Jonathan twee elfjes, Grizzel en Greedigut, op. Met de hulp van deze twee elfjes duikt Jonathan dieper in de geheimen van de zwarte magie. Zijn onschuldige toverij maakt echter de Ghoulies "wakker", een groep boosaardige kleine schepsels. Deze angstaanjagende monsters zijn van plan een bewind van verwoesting en vernietiging te gaan voeren.
