De veelgeprezen regisseur John Landis (animal house, the Blues Brothers) presenteert deze doldwaze parodie op nachtprogramma's, low budget sciencefictionfilms en komische tv-programma's met ingeblikte lachsalco's, een film boordevol maffe sketches waar je in blijft van het lachen. Alles draait om een televisiestation dat een sciencefictionfilm uitzendt in de stijl van de jaren '50, onderbroken door bizarre reclamespotjes, maffe korte filmpjes en waanzinnige speciale uitzendingen. Deze satirische kijk op het leven van nu en de popcultuur prikt dwars door de sufste spektakelshows heen die ooit zijn gemaakt in naam van het grote vermaak. Een pittige kijk op het beste van het slechste dat televisie te bieden heeft.
